Trafo Power Solutions Supplies Mobile Substation for Australian Mining Operation
Trafo Power Solutions has delivered a skid-mounted mobile substation to an opencast mining operation in Queensland, Australia, supporting on-site power generation and distribution.
The turnkey solution enables the mine to step up generated power from 400V to 6.6kV using a 2 000kVA mobile substation that can be relocated across the site as operational requirements change. The system integrates low-voltage and medium-voltage switchgear and is designed for plug-and-play operation, reducing downtime when the unit is moved.
According to David Claassen, managing director of Trafo Power Solutions, the substation was engineered to withstand the demanding conditions typical of mining environments, including high vibration levels. The design incorporates rigid mounting, anti-vibration components, and secure cable terminations suited to mobile applications.
Compliance with Australian national electrical standards formed a key part of the project scope. The design also accommodated the customer’s preference for equipment commonly used in the Australian market, particularly in low-voltage protection, relays, and monitoring systems, to support local servicing and aftersales requirements.
Factory inspections and acceptance testing were conducted remotely, using digital communication technologies to allow customer participation despite the geographic distance.
Trafo Power Solutions, headquartered in South Africa, designs and supplies dry-type transformers and custom-engineered power solutions for mining and industrial customers across Africa and international markets.
