Trafo Power Solutions Expands Portfolio to Include Modular Substations

13 Sep 2023

According to David Claassen, Managing Director of Trafo Power Solutions, what sets modular substations apart is their construction and testing in controlled workshop conditions, resulting in streamlined, cost-effective, and high-quality production.

South Africa dry-type transformer specialist, Trafo Power Solutions, recently announced that it has diversified its product range to incorporate modular substations, leveraging its extensive expertise in tailored electrical solutions.

David Claassen, Managing Director of Trafo Power Solutions, explained that the company's expansion into modular substations stemmed from growing demand for complementary systems associated with dry-type transformers. Customers sought packaged solutions that integrated dry-type transformers seamlessly, he said.

According to Claassen, what sets modular substations apart is their construction and testing in controlled workshop conditions, resulting in streamlined, cost-effective, and high-quality production. This approach aligns perfectly with dry-type transformers, as their inherent safety permits installation within the compact E-house structure, simplifying transportation and on-site assembly.

Claassen elaborated on the advantages of integrating dry-type transformers within modular substations: "The inherent safety of the dry-type transformer allows it to be installed close to the switchgear inside the modular substation, so there are shorter cable runs and easier installation. The extra cost and management of on-site civils work are also avoided this way."

According to Trafo Power Solutions, its expanded offerings have enhanced its market presence, evolving from a single-component supplier to providing integrated solutions. This approach, as they say, simplifies project management for customers, whether they are end-users or engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) firms, saving time and reducing the risks associated with complex electrical projects.

"We expect the trend towards modular substations to continue strongly. We have, for instance, delivered multiple modular substations to a large data center in Johannesburg. Here, we have provided a full medium voltage modular solution, including switchgear and transformers, complete with cooling and control systems," Claassen concluded.
