Trafo delivers non-standard replacement transformer for a mining company in five weeks

31 May 2019

SOUTH AFRICA - South African dry-type transformer manufacturer Trafo Power Solutions recently came to the rescue of a mining company in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, with an emergency replacement of a failed transformer.

Following the incident, the manufacturer designed, built and delivered a non-standard cast-resin replacement unit in five weeks, reports International Mining.

The failed transformer was initially assessed and it was decided that it would be more economical to replace the unit than perform major repairs. The mine required a 1,600 kVA dry-type transformer with a non-standard tap setting arrangement of seven tap settings instead of the normal five.

The new unit was manufactured by the company's European partner in Italy. It took four weeks to manufacture and then a week to fly in the transformer and deliver it to the customer.
