Tironi successfully tests the largest transformer ever built at its Modena plant

16 Apr 2019

ITALY, MODENA - Just over a year after signing the contract with a customer from Norway, Italian power transformer manufacturer Elettromeccanica Tironi has successfully completed all factory tests for the largest transformer ever built at its plant in Modena.

The 300 MVA, 420 (300)/138 kV transformer weighing about 782,641 lbs (355 tons) in total is among the largest power transformers ever made in Italy, the manufacturer said in the press statement.

The manufacture of the unit was a great challenge both technologically and financially, considering the size of the transformer and the primary voltage change which will allow the transformer to be used both on a 420 kV and 300 kV network. This required targeted investments to adapt and modernize the factory's large transformer assembly department.

Now the focus is on transporting the transformer to its destination in Norway, another exceptional challenge given the dimensions of the unit and the delays caused by obtaining transit permits.
