The burgeoning renewable energy sector in Africa is increasingly turning to modular substations and dry-type transformers to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of solar and wind projects. David Claassen, Managing Director of Trafo Power Solutions, emphasizes the common challenge faced by solar and wind farms--managing multiple sources of generated energy. In large-scale solar plants, for instance, the need for numerous substations at different locations within the project is evident.

Claassen notes that the modular approach to substation construction offers quality benefits in dedicated workshop conditions and cost advantages related to economies of scale. This streamlined production not only ensures quicker completion but also requires a smaller team than traditional on-site construction, crucial in remote areas where logistical challenges abound.

One critical aspect highlighted by Claassen is the suitability of dry-type transformers for these applications. Unlike conventional oil-cooled transformers, dry-type transformers are air-cooled, aligning closely with the sustainability philosophy of clean, renewable energy. Their eco-friendly design eliminates the risk of oil contamination, enhancing safety and allowing placement in close proximity to human traffic.

For independent power producers (IPPs) driving most renewable projects, the cost per kilowatt-hour is paramount. The modular format saves on upfront capital, while dry-type transformers require minimal maintenance, reducing ongoing operational costs compared to their oil-cooled counterparts. Claassen underscores the importance of purpose-designed transformers, considering factors like high ambient temperatures and non-linear supply from inverters.
