Terna’s New Electrical Substation in Olbia Advances
Terna, Italy's leading electricity transmission operator, has initiated a key infrastructure project with the launch of the authorization procedure for a new electrical substation in Olbia, Sardinia. The Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security announced the start of this process, marking progress in strengthening the island's power network.
The Olbia substation aims to improve electricity transmission reliability and support growing energy demands in the region, potentially integrating more renewable sources like offshore wind. Similar Terna initiatives, such as underground lines and substation upgrades, have invested millions to replace outdated overhead infrastructure with resilient underground cables. This project aligns with national efforts to modernize the grid amid rising renewable energy needs.
Terna, under CEO Giuseppina Di Foggia, frequently pursues such upgrades across Italy, including recent Sardinian Link efforts worth €300 million to connect northern and southern Sardinia with 1,000 MW capacity. These developments enhance grid meshing, reduce outage risks, and free up land by removing old pylons, as seen in prior Varese and Salerno projects. The Olbia initiative continues this trend, contributing to energy security in a tourism-heavy area.
