Tensio Advances Grid Expansion with New Transformer Substation in Klæbu

27 Apr 2026

Norwegian electricity distribution company Tensio, which owns and operates the power grid across large parts of central Norway’s Trøndelag region, is moving forward with the construction of a new transformer substation in Klæbu to strengthen regional electricity supply.

The project has been awarded to Veidekke, one of Scandinavia’s largest construction and infrastructure firms, under a design-and-build contract valued at approximately NOK 150 million (~$14 million USD), excluding VAT. The contract is part of an existing eight-year framework agreement between the two companies.

The new substation will play a key role in reinforcing the regional power network, helping to meet growing electricity demand and enabling further development in the Trondheim area.

Construction is scheduled to begin shortly after summer 2026, with completion targeted for June 2028.

The Klæbu substation forms part of a broader effort by Tensio to modernise and expand grid infrastructure as electricity demand rises due to electrification, population growth, and industrial development.

Substations are essential components of the power system, allowing electricity to be transformed between voltage levels and distributed efficiently. The new facility is expected to improve grid stability, flexibility, and resilience, while also creating additional capacity for future connections.

The project places strong emphasis on technical quality, execution capability, and health, safety and environmental (HSE) standards, reflecting the increasing complexity of modern grid developments.

Tensio highlighted that the project is part of a wider investment programme aimed at strengthening the electricity network across Trøndelag.

CEO Audhild Kvam said:
“We are in a period where we are investing more than ever in the power supply infrastructure in Trøndelag. This is necessary to ensure a reliable supply of electricity and to facilitate increased capacity to support desired local and regional community development.”

She added:
“In this work, we depend on strong and reliable suppliers, and we are very satisfied with the cooperation with our regional partner, Veidekke Bygg Trøndelag. This is the fourth substation building project we are carrying out together.”

From Veidekke, director Torgeir Loholt Wiig commented:
“Building critical infrastructure is an assignment we are more than happy to undertake, and we greatly appreciate the opportunity to contribute to a safe, modern and reliable power supply for Trondheim for decades to come.”

He added:
“The construction works will be carried out in close collaboration with Tensio, with a strong focus on safe operations and minimising impact on the surrounding environment.”

The Klæbu substation is expected to support long-term regional development, ensuring sufficient electricity capacity for industry, transport electrification, and residential expansion.

More broadly, the project reflects a wider trend across Europe, where utilities and grid operators are accelerating investment in substations and transmission infrastructure to support the transition to cleaner, more electrified energy systems.
