TenneT’s BorWin3 offshore grid connection begins operations

22 Aug 2019

Petrofac and Siemens have commissioned German-Dutch transmission system operator TenneT's 900MW BorWin3 offshore wind grid connection in the German North Sea.

The BorWin3 offshore wind grid connection, which has started transmitting power, is converting three-phase power generated by offshore wind farms into direct current. The converted power is then transmitted 160 km back to shore into the German national grid, from where it will be supplied to more than a million households, reports NS Energy.

For the project, Siemens supplied a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) station and high-voltage equipment for the grid access system along with a complete onshore converter station.

BorWin3 is the third project executed by TenneT off the coast of Borkum using direct current technology after the BorWin1 and BorWin2 grid connection projects. It is also the twelfth offshore grid connection project for the transmission system operator.
