TenneT awards new offshore grid projects to Hitachi Energy and L&T
Hitachi Energy and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) have secured framework agreements with Dutch-German transmission system operator TenneT to deliver two new high-voltage direct current (HVDC) grid connections supporting offshore wind integration in the North Sea. The contracts cover the Nederwiek3 and LanWin5 projects, each designed to transmit up to 2GW of renewable electricity to the onshore grid.
The agreements form part of TenneT's wider 2GW offshore grid programme, which aims to accelerate the connection of offshore wind capacity in the Netherlands and Germany. According to the companies, the framework covers six projects in principle, with opportunities for additional work under the programme.
Under the contracts, Hitachi Energy will supply HVDC technology, including converter stations and associated grid integration systems, while L&T will be responsible for engineering, procurement and construction of the offshore platforms and onshore infrastructure.
Timo Tatar, Chief Operating Officer of Large Projects Offshore at TenneT, described the agreements as "an important milestone" in delivering the company's offshore grid expansion programme. Andreas Schierenbeck, Chief Executive Officer of Hitachi Energy, said the projects would help accelerate Europe's energy transition by expanding transmission infrastructure needed to integrate growing volumes of offshore renewable energy.
The projects are intended to strengthen electricity transmission capacity while supporting the continued expansion of offshore wind generation across the North Sea region, a key component of Europe's long-term decarbonisation strategy.
