TCN Upgrades Agbara Substation to Meet Growing Power Demand

19 Mar 2025
Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has begun upgrading the Agbara 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Ogun State, a move designed to strengthen the country's power supply infrastructure. The upgrade involves replacing the existing 2x45MVA transformers with 2x100MVA units to accommodate the growing electricity demand in Agbara and its surrounding industrial zones.

In a statement, Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, explained that the upgrade aims to meet the rising power needs of local businesses, particularly in the Agbara Industrial Zone, which houses numerous manufacturing companies. This upgrade will also allow Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) to distribute more power to businesses and residential areas in the region.

To minimize disruptions, the upgrade will occur in phases. The first phase involves replacing one 45MVA transformer while the second remains operational. Once completed, the substation's total capacity will increase from 150MVA to 260MVA, significantly improving service reliability.

While temporary load shedding is expected during the process, TCN has assured consumers that efforts are being made to reduce disruptions and restore normal power supply as quickly as possible. This upgrade is part of TCN's ongoing commitment to strengthening Nigeria's power infrastructure and grid stability.
