TCN Targets 10,000MW Power Evacuation to Strengthen Grid
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced plans to increase its electricity transmission capacity to 10,000 megawatts (MW) within the next two years. The company's Managing Director, Sule Abdulaziz, disclosed this during the State House Weekly Briefing, emphasizing the progress made in strengthening Nigeria's power infrastructure.
Currently, TCN's power evacuation capacity stands at 8,500MW, reflecting a significant improvement in grid efficiency. The company credits these advancements to sustained government support through the Ministry of Power and the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.
Among its recent achievements, TCN has:

Installed and commissioned 66 power transformers

Completed new transmission substations and upgraded existing lines

Delivered 6,000MVA worth of projects under World Bank funding

Reduced grid disturbances by 76.47% over the past five years
Looking ahead, TCN is advancing the SCADA project, which is currently 69% complete. Once finalized, the system will enhance real-time monitoring and improve grid efficiency. Additionally, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is enforcing the Free Governor Control mechanism to stabilize power supply and minimize losses.
To maintain these improvements, TCN has implemented an enhanced maintenance strategy, focusing on preventive maintenance, regular inspections, and rapid fault response.
