TCN Expands Grid Capacity with New 300MVA Transformer in Lagos
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commissioned a new 300MVA transformer at its Egbin Transmission Substation in Lagos State, increasing the facility’s total capacity from 300MVA to 450MVA.
According to a statement released on February 22, 2025, the upgrade is expected to improve bulk power supply to the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), which serves several parts of Lagos and surrounding communities.
The Egbin substation is a major node on Nigeria’s transmission network, supplying electricity to densely populated and commercially active areas. The additional transformer is intended to enhance network flexibility, reduce system overload, and support growing demand across residential and industrial sectors.
Ndidi Mbah, General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, said the upgrade will directly benefit customers in Ikorodu, Shagamu, Ijede, and neighboring areas by improving reliability and contributing to grid stability.
Also commenting on the development, Adeshina Adeonipekun, General Manager of Transmission for the Lagos Region, stated that the project was completed in-house by TCN engineers within six weeks.
The commissioning forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s national grid infrastructure and improve power delivery across key urban centers.
