Svenska kraftnät Contracts Hitachi Energy for Major Transmission Upgrade
Hitachi Energy has signed a major contract with Svenska kraftnät, Sweden’s national transmission system operator, to deliver advanced grid connection solutions aimed at strengthening electricity supply in the Stockholm region.
The order, valued at more than USD 215 million (SEK 2 billion), forms part of Svenska kraftnät’s Storstockholm Väst initiative, which seeks to modernize and expand the transmission network to meet rising electricity demand driven by population growth, electrification, and increased data center capacity.
Under the agreement, Hitachi Energy will deliver five 420 kV grid connection solutions using its EconiQ® portfolio of SF₆-free gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). The installations will be deployed at the Kappetorp, Kronåsen, Råcksta, Björksätra, and Anneberg substations, extending the 400 kV transmission network closer to central Stockholm.
According to the project scope, the upgrades will replace aging infrastructure and enable up to an additional 5 terawatt-hours of annual electricity consumption—enough to supply approximately one million households. All five substations are scheduled to be commissioned by 2030.
The EconiQ GIS technology eliminates the use of sulfur hexafluoride (SF₆), a potent greenhouse gas, reducing carbon emissions by up to 99 percent compared with conventional alternatives. The delivery also includes control and protection systems, backup power solutions, installation, and commissioning.
The project marks one of the largest grid infrastructure investments in the Stockholm region in recent years and supports Sweden’s long-term energy security and climate objectives.
