SUNfarming and SPIE to Install Major Transformers for Green Energy Hub

30 Aug 2024
SUNfarming GmbH and SPIE have announced plans to build a new transformer substation for the Klimapark Steinhöfel, Europe's largest agrivoltaic project. Scheduled to begin construction in the third quarter of 2025, the substation will manage the distribution of up to 753 megawatts peak (MWp) of solar energy generated from the park, which spans approximately 500 hectares.

The substation will feature four transformers and will be integrated into the high-voltage grid of the regional distributor E.DIS Netz GmbH. The project aims to efficiently combine solar power with agriculture, supporting sustainable land use and enhancing local biodiversity.

Burkhard Sager, Head of the High Voltage division at SPIE Germany & Central Europe, emphasized the technical challenge and tight schedule of the project, stating that the company's extensive experience is crucial for its success. Martin Tauschke, co-founder and Managing Director of SUNfarming, highlighted the project's significance and the collaborative efforts with local stakeholders.

The substation is expected to be commissioned by the second quarter of 2026, marking a significant step towards integrating green energy into the grid and advancing the energy transition.

Petra Kortenkamp, Head of Individual Customers at E.DIS Netz GmbH, noted that the substation's development underscores their commitment to a sustainable energy infrastructure, facilitating the efficient integration of renewable energy.
