SSEN Transmission Submits Fanellan 400kV Substation Plans for Approval

12 Mar 2025

SSEN Transmission has submitted a planning application to The Highland Council for the development of the Fanellan 400kV substation and HVDC converter station, a key infrastructure project aimed at strengthening Scotland's energy network.

Located southwest of Beauly, the project will connect to the existing Beauly-Denny 400kV Overhead Line and support the UK and Scottish Governments' 2030 offshore wind generation targets.

Following three years of development and engagement, including four public consultations attended by over 300 people, the proposal includes:

  • A 525m x 305m (1772.4ft x 1000,6ft) Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) substation platform.
  • AIS switchgear and busbar to connect incoming circuits and HVDC converter station cables.
  • Step-down transformers for low-voltage AC supply.
  • A 45m x 25m control building (147,6ft x 82ft), max height 8m (26.2ft)
  • Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) with maintenance access.

Ross McKay, senior development project manager at SSEN Transmission, highlighted the project's role in enhancing energy security, facilitating clean power, and driving economic activity in the north of Scotland.

"The National Energy Systems Operator identified the need for this project through extensive studies. We have balanced environmental and technical considerations while consulting the local community," he said.

SSEN Transmission now awaits The Highland Council's decision as the planning process moves forward.
