SSEN Transmission Completes Kinardochy Substation

25 Oct 2024
SSEN Transmission and its primary contractor Siemens BAM have successfully energized the new Kinardochy Substation in Highland Perthshire, marking a significant milestone in the region's transition to net zero emissions. Located three miles from Tummel Bridge, the substation reached full operational capacity in October after nearly 30 months of construction.

The Kinardochy Substation is designed to stabilize voltage levels and enhance power flow management across the transmission network, enabling additional renewable energy connections to the grid. Operating initially at 275 kV, the substation has been built with future expansion in mind, allowing for an upgrade to 400 kV with minimal adjustments. The substation is connected to the Beauly-Denny line, which is slated for a 400 kV double-circuit upgrade under SSEN Transmission's Pathway to 2030 program.

Environmental and community considerations were key during the substation's construction. The project included natural landscaping to blend with the local scenery, while over 10,000 native trees and wildflowers will be planted to further minimize the visual impact and enhance local biodiversity. Contributions to local initiatives, including support for food banks, community woodlands, and the Kinloch Rannoch Gathering, have further strengthened ties with the community.

Muhammed Saeed Chaudhary, Project Manager at SSEN Transmission, acknowledged the support of the local community and the dedication of project teams, stating that these efforts were vital in reaching the full energization milestone.
