SSE Renewables and Echelon Data Centres to build $59m substation in Ireland

19 Nov 2020
IRELAND - SSE Renewables and Echelon Data Centres have agreed to develop a 220 kV substation at the Avoca River Business Park, Arklow.

The new substation will draw power from the 520 MW Arklow Bank Wind Farm Phase 2 which SSE Renewables is planning to build three to eight miles off the coast of County Wicklow.
The substation will connect the wind farm to the Irish grid and power Echelon's 100 MW DUB20 data center, under development at the Avoca River Business Park in Arklow.
The project is estimated to need an investment of around $59 million.
SSE Renewables will be responsible for the development and construction of the substation on behalf of both developers.
The project is the first joint initiative between an offshore wind farm and a data centre to develop the grid infrastructure in Ireland.
