SP Energy Networks Enhances Electrical Grid with Brokencross Wind Farm Connection and Transformer Upgrades

26 Aug 2024
SP Energy Networks has successfully completed a critical project to connect the Brokencross Wind Farm to the electricity network, marking a significant step in a broader initiative to modernize the energy infrastructure in South Lanarkshire. This project is part of a larger investment of over £20 million aimed at expanding the region's renewable energy capabilities.

The comprehensive investment includes upgrades at Brokencross Wind Farm, the Elvanfoot Substation, and the proposed Coalburn North high-voltage grid substation. These projects are designed to enhance the region's ability to harness wind resources, supporting the growing demand for renewable energy and the adoption of green technologies like electric vehicles and heat pumps.

The Elvanfoot Substation has undergone an £11 million upgrade, introducing advanced technology, including two transformers, to efficiently manage and distribute electricity generated from wind power. Specialist contractors such as Kolektor, RJ McLeod, and Kirby Engineering are involved in these upgrades, which are expected to be completed by the last quarter of 2024.

A significant £7 million investment has also been made at the Brokencross Wind Farm's substation, which now includes a collector substation. This new infrastructure feeds energy from 10 new wind turbines into the Coalburn Grid Substation, providing power to 50,000 homes annually.

Recognizing the increasing demand for renewable energy connections, SP Energy Networks is also proposing the construction of the Coalburn North high-voltage grid substation near the existing Coalburn Substation, south of Lesmahagow.
