SP Energy Networks Boosts Kilmarnock Power Resilience with $11.3m Upgrade

9 Jun 2025

A major infrastructure upgrade at a key substation in Kilmarnock has been completed following a two-year, £8.4 million ($11.3 million) investment by SP Energy Networks.

The upgrade, which began in March 2023, involved replacing two ageing transformers and modernising other critical equipment that had reached the end of its operational life. The improvements are designed to strengthen power supply resilience and boost local capacity to handle increasing electricity demand.

According to Jason Mcinally, Project Manager at SP Energy Networks, the project will help Kilmarnock and surrounding areas meet the growing needs of a low-carbon future, including greater reliance on electricity for heating and transport.

Demand for electricity in the UK is expected to double by 2050, driven by decarbonisation efforts and increased electrification. The Kilmarnock upgrade aims to support the delivery of more locally generated, green electricity and improve day-to-day reliability for homes and businesses.

The project was completed with minimal disruption to the local community.
