South Korean Transformers Conquer the U.S. Market Amid Soaring Demand

South Korean heavy electrical equipment manufacturers are making a significant impact in the United States, capitalizing on the surging demand for transformers, electric vehicle charging systems, and renewable energy equipment. Companies like HD Hyundai Electric Co., Hyosung Heavy Industries Corp., and LS Electric Co. have been expanding their presence in the world's second-largest electricity consumer, securing substantial orders and ensuring that products are delivered on time.

HD Hyundai Electric, formerly known as Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems Co., and Hyosung are operating their U.S. factories at capacities exceeding their nominal limits, including overtime work during nights and weekends. This increased demand from the U.S. led to higher exports from South Korea, as local production alone couldn't keep up with the orders.

The U.S. has witnessed a surge in demand for electrical equipment, driven by the need to replace aging power transmission and distribution infrastructure. A substantial portion of distribution transformers in the country are over 25 years old. Additionally, the growing adoption of renewable energy sources, such as solar power, has increased the requirement for transformers to transmit electricity. The rising popularity of home electric vehicle (EV) chargers has further contributed to the demand for electrical equipment.

South Korean manufacturers are well-positioned to benefit from the increasing focus on eco-friendly insulators for transformers. HD Hyundai Electric and Hyosung have introduced environmentally friendly solutions, including eco-friendly insulating oil and transformers.

The ability to provide fast delivery of customized transformers is a significant advantage for South Korean companies. Transformer manufacturers typically produce tailored products for each customer, and prompt delivery is crucial. South Korean producers are known for their reliability, often delivering products to loyal customers within seven to eight months, compared to the industry standard of ten months.

LS Electric has also entered the U.S. market, leveraging the construction of new factories by South Korean companies like Hyundai Motor Co. and LG Energy Solution Ltd. While it does not have a U.S. plant, LS Electric has secured 28% of its total contracts from U.S. orders in the second quarter.

In a sector where operational stability is paramount, South Korean electrical equipment manufacturers have gained a reputation for being dependable suppliers, thanks to their track record of delivering orders as per customers' requirements and schedules.
