SMA America to Assemble Medium-Voltage Transformers and Power Stations in U.S. in 2026

20 May 2025
SMA America will begin assembling its Medium Voltage Power Station (MVPS) solutions in the United States starting in early 2026, emphasizing the integration of medium-voltage transformers with central inverters and switchgear. This strategic shift aims to enhance logistics and service efficiency for utility-scale solar projects nationwide. While the central inverters will continue to be manufactured in Germany, they will be shipped to the U.S. for final integration with the transformers and skids into a complete system.

The MVPS is a turnkey solution housed in a 20-foot skidded container, combining SMA central inverters with medium-voltage transformers and switchgear to ensure reliable, grid-compliant energy conversion for large-scale solar and storage projects. This domestic assembly is expected to reduce shipping complexities and shorten project timelines.

Jay Arghestani, managing director of large-scale sales, technology, and marketing for SMA America, noted that local integration could also support customers' domestic content strategies under the Inflation Reduction Act, depending on solution configurations.

Assembly will commence in Q1 2026, with broader phased availability planned for Q2. The share of locally sourced components, particularly transformers, will increase progressively as U.S. production capacity ramps up.
