Siemens Energy to Supply Transformers for 2 GW Offshore Wind Connection
Siemens Energy signed an agreement with 50Hertz Transmission GmbH to deliver a 2 GW offshore grid connection system for North Sea wind farms, reinforcing demand for high-voltage transformers and HVDC transmission infrastructure in Europe.
The project, known as North Sea Connector 2, will transmit up to 2 gigawatts of offshore wind power to the German mainland using an offshore converter platform designed for long-distance subsea transmission.
The platform will be equipped with Siemens Energy’s electrical transmission systems, including HVDC converter technology, power transformers, and SF₆-free gas-insulated switchgear, all primarily manufactured in Germany.
Key transformer and grid equipment will be produced at Siemens Energy facilities in Nuremberg and Berlin, while the offshore platform structure will be fabricated by Neptun Werft in collaboration with Smulders Offshore Renewables.
The system will convert alternating current (AC) generated by offshore wind turbines into direct current (DC) at sea, enabling efficient long-distance transmission via subsea cables before reconversion at an onshore converter station and integration into the transmission grid.
Approximately 95% of project execution will take place in Germany, reflecting increasing domestic demand for high-capacity grid infrastructure, power transformers, and converter station equipment required to support offshore wind expansion.
The project highlights the growing role of transformer manufacturers and HVDC system integrators in enabling large-scale renewable energy transmission across European offshore wind corridors.
