Siemens Energy to supply power equipment for North Sea platforms overhaul

17 Sep 2021

MUNICH, GERMANY - According to Equinor's estimates, the project ought to reduce carbon emissions by around 500,000 metric tons/yr, equivalent to around 1% of Norway's entire CO2 emissions.

Siemens Energy has been asked to provide the electrical transmission, distribution, and power management system (PMS) for the Equinor-operated Troll West electrification project in the Norwegian North Sea.

The planned overhaul is said to include replacing existing gas turbine-driven generators and compressors on the Troll B and C semisubmersible platforms with power from shore, via 65 kilometres (40 miles) of 150-MW subsea transmission cable from the Kollsnes natural gas processing plant on the island of Ona.

Siemens will supply transformers, reactors, and switchgears to the project as well as a static frequency converter systems, large-scale drive trains, and special frequency converters, which will allow power to flow bi-directionally for normal and island operation.

The newly installed PMS system should help balance power demand and consumption and help in the upkeep of the overall grid stability.

The installation and commissioning of the electrical equipment for Troll West are scheduled for 2022 - 2023.
