Siemens Energy to Deliver Transformers Under $26M Contract with Hidroelectrica
Siemens Energy has secured a $26 million (€23 million) contract to supply high-voltage transformers for the modernization of Romania’s Porțile de Fier I hydropower plant, following an open tender process conducted by Hidroelectrica.
The German energy technology company won the auction with a bid of 117.1 million lei ($26 million), narrowly below the initial estimated value of 118.3 million lei. The tender was carried out through Romania’s Public Procurement Electronic System and launched in September 2025.
Under the agreement, Siemens Energy will provide seven 216 MVA, 15.75/242 kV transformers. These components are essential for maintaining the reliability and efficiency of the plant’s operations, according to Bogdan Badea, CEO of Hidroelectrica.
Located on the Danube River, Porțile de Fier I is the largest hydropower plant operated by Hidroelectrica, with an installed capacity of approximately 1,166 MW on the Romanian side. The facility generates an average of 4 to 5 TWh of electricity annually under normal hydrological conditions.
Hidroelectrica, majority-owned by the Romanian state, manages more than 6.3 GW of installed hydropower capacity and also operates the Crucea wind farm, making it the country’s largest producer of renewable electricity.
The contract forms part of ongoing efforts to modernize critical energy infrastructure and support the long-term stability of Romania’s power system.
