Siemens Energy Invests $258 Million to Expand Nuremberg Transformer Factory
Siemens Energy is investing approximately $258 million (€220 million) to expand its transformer factory in Nuremberg, Germany, creating 350 new jobs. The expansion will add around 16,000 square meters of production space, increasing capacity by roughly 50%, and is expected to be operational by 2028.
The project was marked by a foundation stone ceremony attended by Dr. Markus Söder, Bavarian Minister President, and Marcus König, Mayor of Nuremberg. The Free State of Bavaria is supporting the initiative with up to $23.5 million (€20 million) in technology funding to strengthen Nuremberg as a hub for innovation and research.
Christian Bruch, CEO of Siemens Energy, highlighted the company's 113-year history of transformer manufacturing in Nuremberg and emphasized Germany's strong infrastructure and skilled workforce as key factors for continuing to deliver critical energy technologies globally.
Transformers produced in Nuremberg play a central role in power grids, enabling electricity transmission over long distances and supporting international energy links. The facility's products are used worldwide, including in offshore wind projects and grid stabilization initiatives.
This investment follows a $105 million (€90 million) expansion for a converter production facility announced in 2024. Over the past three years, Siemens Energy has invested about $1.17 billion (€1 billion) in Germany, creating over 1,300 new jobs in 2024 and projecting up to 1,500 additional positions by 2026.
