Siemens Energy and thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel Join Forces for Climate-Friendly Power Transformers

29 Feb 2024

Siemens Energy and thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel are teaming up to revolutionize the offshore wind industry by reducing CO2 emissions in power transformers. In a groundbreaking collaboration, thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel has received its largest-ever order from Siemens Energy for bluemint® powercore® - an innovative steel technology designed to minimize environmental impact. The order aims to equip around 700 transformers in offshore wind turbines from Siemens Gamesa, marking a significant milestone in the quest for sustainable energy solutions.

The utilization of bluemint® powercore® steel not only enhances the efficiency of transformers but also contributes to a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions. With more than 12,000 tons of CO2 expected to be avoided, this initiative underscores the commitment of both companies to combatting climate change. The delivery of bluemint® powercore® will be staggered over three years until the end of 2026, showcasing a long-term dedication to environmental stewardship.

Transformers play a pivotal role in the offshore wind sector, facilitating the efficient conversion of electric energy with minimal loss. By incorporating CO2-reduced bluemint® powercore® steel, Siemens Energy aims to enhance the sustainability of its wind power operations across Europe. The project, set to be implemented in offshore wind farms in Germany, UK, and France, represents a significant step towards achieving a greener energy transition on the continent.

This collaboration between Siemens Energy and thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel not only demonstrates technological innovation but also highlights the importance of industry partnerships in driving climate-friendly solutions. As both companies advocate for the establishment of green lead markets and uniform standards for CO2-reduced steel, they pave the way for a more sustainable future in the energy sector.
