Siemens consortium wins $420m contract for HVDC link in Greece

16 Jun 2020
CRETE, GREECE - A consortium led by Siemens has won a turnkey contract for two converter stations for the Greek high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) link that will connect the Island of Crete with mainland Greece.

Siemens and TERNA consortium have been selected by Greek independent power transmission operator, IPTO's wholly owned subsidiary Ariadne Interconnection, reports NS Energy.
Under the contract, Siemens will be responsible for the design, supply and installation of a 1,000 MW converter system and a gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation on Crete.
The contract is worth $420.4 million (€370 million).
The link is scheduled to be commissioned in mid-2023. Once online, it will facilitate the transmission of energy from renewable resources generated on the Greek mainland to the island.
