SHE Transmission proposes $877m Scotland power link

8 Apr 2020

SCOTLAND, UK - Energy company SHE Transmission has submitted an application to perform works on the subsea power link between Shetland and the Scottish mainland valued at $877 million (£709 million).

The project would include installing a 155-mile high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable from Noss Head in Caithness to Weisdale Voe, and construction of the HVDC converter station at Upper Kergord where the cable would connect.

The planned link consists of two power cables and a fiber optic communications cable. It would allow large wind farms to send power to the national grid.

SHE Transmission, part of Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), said that the link would enable the export of renewable energy from Shetland, when there is a surplus in generation and the import of renewable energy to Shetland, when there is insufficient generation in Shetland.
