SGS, Siemens Energy Advance SuedLink in Germany
SGS Industrial Services is carrying out the complete electrical installation of a new HVDC converter station in Brunsbüttel, Germany, as part of the SuedLink power transmission project.
The project is being delivered for Siemens Energy on behalf of TenneT Germany. Work began in February 2026 and is scheduled to run for 12 months, with around 90 SGS specialists involved at peak.
The installation covers the HVDC converters, seven transformers, cooling systems, high-voltage equipment, control and protection systems, cable systems, lightning protection and parts of the earthing system.
The project includes the installation of seven transformers weighing 484 tonnes each and approximately 300 kilometres of cable.
SuedLink is a planned 700-kilometre HVDC connection linking northern and southern Germany. It will have a transmission capacity of 4 GW at 525 kV, supporting the integration of renewable electricity into Germany's grid.
Brunsbüttel is the fourth HVDC converter station SGS has installed for Siemens Energy, following projects in Wolmirstedt, Isar and Großgartach.
