SGB-SMIT tests transformer with bio-based fluid from Nynas

2 Feb 2021
GERMANY -- The SGB-SMIT Group has successfully tested its first transformer with the new bio-based hydrocarbon from Nynas.

The 80 MVA ONAF 115/21 kV transformer manufactured in Regensburg has successfully passed the complete sequence of factory acceptance tests, including lightning impulse and induced over-voltage withstand test.
The design of the transformer was based on GTL insulating fluids. After several verifications, a bio-based hydrocarbon manufactured by Nynas was used without the transformer requiring any special adaptation in this specific transformer design.
A temperature rise test was also performed, demonstrating the cooling potential of the bio-based fluid. This allowed for the validation of the SGB-SMIT technology solution used for the thermal simulations, including modeling and data analysis.
In this specific transformer design, the bio-based hydrocarbon has been fully tested and approved by Starkstrom- Gerätebau, the headquarters of SGB-SMIT Group in Regensburg. The new fluid fulfilled the requirements of the transformer operator, the German utility Westnetz.
SGB-SMIT Group and Nynas hope to achieve a new level of performance and sustainability with the introduction of the bio-based hydrocarbon.
