SGB-SMIT, Electroalfa Inaugurate SGB-ALFA Transformer Plant
SGB-SMIT Group and Electroalfa International have inaugurated the SGB-ALFA transformer factory in Botoșani, Romania, expanding Europe’s capacity for distribution transformer production. The joint venture is positioned to strengthen regional supply chains for critical grid equipment at a time of rising electrification and infrastructure upgrades.
The facility produces oil-immersed distribution transformers in the range of 50 kVA to 1,000 kVA, supplying electricity distribution operators and industrial users in Romania and across European markets. Since production began in July 2025, more than 1,300 transformers have already been manufactured, indicating a rapid production ramp-up.
The project combines SGB-SMIT Group’s engineering and design capabilities with Electroalfa International’s manufacturing base and local market experience. The partnership is structured to improve production efficiency, shorten delivery times, and reinforce supply resilience for European grid operators.
During the inauguration, the companies described the facility as a milestone in expanding their European manufacturing footprint. It was noted that the plant plays a role in “strengthening Europe’s energy infrastructure supply chain” while supporting demand for modern transformer solutions.
Distribution transformers remain a core component of electricity networks, stepping voltage down for end-use consumption across residential, commercial, and light industrial applications. Demand continues to rise due to grid modernization programs, renewable energy integration, and broader electrification trends across Europe.
With its early production output and integrated industrial structure, the SGB-ALFA plant adds additional depth to Europe’s transformer manufacturing base, aligning with ongoing investment in energy system reliability and capacity expansion.
