Seattle upgrades power substation with new transformer

6 Mar 2023

Seattle - New transformer would improve power reliability and load capacity

A new 110-ton electrical transformer has been moved into Seattle's East Pine Substation as part of a multi-year project to upgrade and improve power reliability. The transformer began its journey in Montreal, Canada, and traveled to Vancouver, Washington, before being escorted to the substation. The new transformer would improve power reliability and load capacity, and enable greater control and monitoring capabilities, and has an expected lifespan of 40-50 years.

The city says the final blocks of the transformer's trip were extensively surveyed in advance. With parking restrictions and designated hold points for traffic in place, the transformer was ready to be offloaded at the substation.
