San Diego Port Initiates Groundbreaking Electric Tugboat Charging Station, Ushering in Green Maritime Era

11 Aug 2023

A pioneering step towards sustainable maritime operations is underway as San Diego gears up to welcome the nation's first all-electric, zero-emissions tugboat, slated to set sail early next year. This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone for the shipping industry, which is intensifying efforts to adopt eco-friendly solutions and curb greenhouse gas emissions.

With transportation being a major contributor to the U.S.'s greenhouse gas output, this initiative aligns with broader objectives of environmental preservation, air quality enhancement, and California's ambitious goal of transitioning off-road vehicles and equipment to 100% zero-emission by 2035. Tugboats, pivotal in navigating cargo ships through bustling harbors, are pivotal to the Port of San Diego's operations and the regional economy.

In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Port of San Diego and Crowley, a leading logistics, marine, and energy solutions company, commenced the construction of a shoreside charging station that will power the revolutionary eWolf electric tugboat. The station, a fusion of solar and electric grid power, signifies a powerful step towards clean energy utilization, facilitated by upgrades to essential power transformers. By replacing Crowley's current diesel-powered vessel - consuming a staggering 30,000 gallons of diesel annually - the eWolf tugboat's deployment stands to offset emissions equivalent to 7.6 million car miles per year, reduce coal combustion by 3.5 million pounds, and conserve 350,000 gallons of gasoline.

Diane Takvorian, an environmental justice advocate representing the California Air Resources Board, emphasized the tangible impact of these developments on the communities near the port. Regions like Barrio Logan and National City, where diesel pollution prevails, will experience real-world benefits as cleaner air contributes to better health. Crowley's commitment to fleet electrification extends beyond San Diego, as the company plans to extend similar green technology to other major West Coast ports, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle.

As San Diego takes the lead in embracing electric tugboat technology, the maritime industry witnesses a pivotal transformation, reaffirming the significance of sustainable practices in shaping a greener future.
