Rwanda Installs 290 Transformers to Strengthen Power Supply
Rwanda has launched an initiative to install 290 electricity transformers as part of efforts to reduce power outages and stabilize supply in high-demand areas.
The project is being implemented by Rwanda Energy Group (REG) in collaboration with the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB). It forms part of a broader 18-month upgrade of the country’s electricity distribution network.
According to Dr. Jimmy Gasore, Minister of Infrastructure, the addition of new transformers is intended to ease pressure on the existing grid, which has been strained by rising demand and aging infrastructure. He noted that overloaded and outdated transformers are a key factor behind voltage fluctuations and service interruptions.
Transformers play a central role in electricity distribution by adjusting voltage levels for safe and efficient delivery to homes and businesses. Insufficient transformer capacity can lead to localized outages, particularly during peak usage periods.
The new installations are expected to improve voltage stability, reduce system overloads, and shorten outage durations. Authorities say the upgrades will particularly benefit urban areas experiencing rapid growth and increased electricity consumption.
The transformer rollout comes as Rwanda continues to expand its electricity access and support economic activity that depends on reliable power supply.
