Russian nuclear power plant cuts off 3 units due to transformer malfunction

19 Jul 2019

MOSCOW, RUSSIA - Transformer short circuit at Russia's Kalinin nuclear power plant on Thursday morning caused a complete shutdown of two and a partial shutdown of another power unit, the plant's operating company Rosenergoatom said.

Three of the four generating units of Kalinin station, located 200 miles north-west of Moscow, have been disconnected from the grid at 5:02 Moscow time on Thursday, while the fourth power unit remains in operation, reports the Russian news agency TASS.

According to the statement, the background radiation is normal, and there is no damage to the main equipment of the station.

The three units are tentatively expected to go back online on July 19 after the cause of the incident has been confirmed.

In 2016, two people were injured at the Kalinin NPP after a short circuit occurred at the electrical equipment of power unit No. 3.
