Rețele Electrice România, part of the PPC Group, has finalized modernization works at the 110/20 kV IRUM transformer station in Deva, following an investment of over $4.1 million (RON 19 million) from its own resources.

Commissioned in 1980, the substation serves approximately 14,000 customers through low- and medium-voltage lines, 33 kilometers of underground cables, and 53 secondary substations. It also functions as the main backup for the Deva CFR and Decebal substations.

The project was carried out in two stages. The first focused on 20 kV primary equipment, including 13 medium-voltage cells and the replacement of one transformer, alongside modernization of neutral treatment systems and relay protections. The second stage covered the 110 kV primary equipment, replacement of the second transformer, and enhanced protection systems on the IRUM-PESTIS and IRUM-PAULIS lines.

According to Mihai Pește, General Director of Rețele Electrice România, the modernization strengthens grid reliability, increases digitalization, and supports integration of renewable energy sources. The investment is expected to reduce outage durations, improve supply security, and contribute to the area's economic and social development.

The IRUM station now has an installed power of 50 MVA, equipped with two 25 MVA transformers, ensuring better service continuity while preserving integration within the urban landscape.
