R&S supplies 11 transformers for thermal network project at Lake Geneva

2 Feb 2022

SWITZERLAND - Services Industriels Genevois (SIG) has commissioned Rauscher & Stoecklin (R&S) to deliver 11 low-loss transformers for the thermal exchange network project "GeniLac" on Lake Geneva.

Services Industriels Genevois (SIG) is a Geneva-based provider of local water, gas, electricity and thermal energy services.

With the project "GeniLac", SIG wants to exploit the energy potential of the biggest lake in Switzerland.  As part of the project, lake water is used to cool buildings through a network of underground pipelines.

SIG is currently building a new underground pumping station in Le Vengeron at a depth of 17 m (around 56 ft), with pipes of almost 2 m (6.6 ft) in diameter to be laid.

R&S contributes to the project with the delivery of 11 special low-loss oil-type transformers which will supply the pumps with the required power. There 11 units will be installed over a period of 10 years.

The use of lake water for heating is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% and increase electricity savings by up to 80% when used for cooling.

Project completion is expected in 2035.
