Public Utilities Commission Approves Disposal of Surplus Transformers and Launches Lead Service Protection Initiative

25 May 2023

The Public Utilities Commission has approved the removal of surplus transformers previously owned by the city in New Ulm, Minnesota.

Due to lack of need and disrepair, several above ground transformers, which were responsible for distributing electricity from street poles, will be disposed of. The transition to underground power supply has rendered these transformers unnecessary.

In a separate endeavor, the PUC is striving to safeguard the public's water service lines from lead contamination. Homeowners are encouraged to participate by filling out an online form that provides details about the materials used in their water lines. New Ulm Public Utilities aims to replace all publicly-owned portions of lead service lines in the coming years, starting with an inventory of privately owned water service lines. To contribute, homeowners can visit "forms.ci.new-ulm.us/forms/LeadAndCopperSurvey" to submit their water service line data, with a visual reference of typical service lines available in the form.
