Public Review Open for Hydro One’s Power-Packed Initiative

13 Nov 2023

In a bid to fortify the region's power infrastructure, Hydro One has opened the draft environmental study report for public review, unveiling details of the proposed St. Clair Transmission Line project. The report, conducted under the Class Environmental Assessment, comprehensively outlines the project's scope, including the route, potential impacts on natural and socio-economic environments, and measures to mitigate adverse effects.

The St. Clair Transmission Line, envisioned as a new double-circuit 230-kilovolt transmission, is poised to deliver an additional 450 megawatts of electricity, equivalent to powering the entire City of London. The primary objective is to enhance the reliability and resiliency of the power supply in the region, fostering increased economic growth in sectors like agriculture and the electric vehicle industry, particularly in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent.

Integral to the project is the proposed expansion of the Lambton transformer station and Chatham switching station, along with upgrades to the Wallaceburg transformer station. Hydro One, in a collaborative effort with five area First Nations groups, has offered a 50-50 equity partnership in the project's line component, emphasizing a commitment to inclusive and community-centric development.
