Prolec GE to Invest $140M in North Carolina Transformer Manufacturing Expansion

15 May 2025
Prolec GE, a joint venture between Xignux and GE Vernova, announced a $140 million investment to expand its transformer manufacturing capacity in Goldsboro, North Carolina. The expansion includes the construction of a new 144,000-square-foot facility that will double the site's output of medium power transformers.

The new facility will be a vertically integrated operation, with in-house core cutting, coil winding, assembly, and testing. The company estimates the project will increase annual production by 200 transformer units and create more than 330 new jobs over the next three years across production, maintenance, engineering, and supervisory roles.

This expansion is part of Prolec GE's broader plan to scale manufacturing capacity in response to increased demand for grid infrastructure across North America. Including previous investments such as its new line in Shreveport, Louisiana, the company's total recent investment in the region now exceeds $300 million.

Public funding will support the project, including $7.3 million from the State of North Carolina, $5.5 million from Wayne County, and a federal tax credit awarded under the Advanced Energy Project Tax Credit Program.

"This investment supports our goal of increasing domestic production capacity for critical grid components," said Juan Ignacio Garza Herrera, CEO of Xignux and Chairman of Prolec GE.

The project was announced at the Maxwell Center in Goldsboro, with participation from Governor Josh Stein and local officials.
