Prolec Energy has successfully delivered a 345/115kV, 240/320/400 MVA Waukesha® transformer to support critical infrastructure upgrades in De Soto, Kansas. The transformer will be a key component of Evergy's new Atlantic substation, which is being constructed to meet the energy demands of Panasonic's EV battery manufacturing facility.

The substation, set to be operational by August 2025, will enhance grid reliability and increase power capacity in the region. To facilitate the delivery, the transformer was first shipped by rail from Waukesha, WI, to De Soto, KS. From there, it was carefully transported via an 18-axle trailer, moving approximately three miles south of town to the substation site. The transformer itself stands 17 feet tall and 13 feet wide, with a total weight of 490,000 lbs. When combined with the truck and trailer, the total transport weight reached 750,000 lbs.

To ensure a safe and efficient journey, Prolec Energy worked closely with local law enforcement to coordinate traffic control during transport, minimizing disruptions.

In addition to the Atlantic substation, Evergy is also developing the Pacific substation to further support the Panasonic facility. Unlike the Atlantic project, most of the transformers for Pacific have been transported directly from the factory by truck. This substation is expected to be fully energized by the end of the year.
