President Piñera inaugurates $1b electric highway in Chile

25 Jun 2019

CHILE - Chilean President Sebastián Piñera accompanied by the Minister of Energy, Juan Carlos Jobet, and Minister of Economy, Juan Andrés Fontaine, inaugurated the Cardones-Polpaico electric transmission line that will connect Chilean regions of Atacama and Metropolitana.

The $1 billion transmission line that was recently successfully tested runs 468 miles (753 kilometers) between Atacama and Santiago and it will allow national electric interconnection in 500 kV, reports BN Americas.

The line, which is already operating at 500 kV, marks an important milestone for Chile completing the interconnection of the National Electric System, thus enabling the massive entry of renewable energy into the energy mix.

The project also included construction of new substations - Nueva Cardones, Nueva Maitencillo and Nueva Pan de Azúcar substations.
