PJM Board Advances Transmission Upgrades Across 13 States

9 Aug 2024

The PJM Board of Managers has approved significant updates to the Regional Transmission Expansion Plan (RTEP) to enhance the efficiency, economy, and reliability of power supply across the 13 states and the District of Columbia served by PJM Interconnection.

On August 7, the Board authorized several new baseline reliability projects, including substantial upgrades in the AEP, ComEd, Dominion, and PSEG transmission zones. These projects, each with estimated costs exceeding $10 million, aim to address overloaded lines, replace aging infrastructure, and improve overall grid performance.

Key projects include the installation of new 765 kV breakers in the AEP zone, a 500 kV line rebuild in Dominion's Yadkin-Fentress corridor, and the construction of a new 230 kV line by PSEG from Jackson Road to Cedar Grove. These enhancements are part of PJM's broader efforts to maintain grid stability and meet future energy demands.

In addition to the new projects, the Board approved scope and cost changes to several existing projects, including a rerouting of the proposed 500 kV Woodside to Aspen line to minimize environmental impact. The changes reflect PJM's commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to develop feasible and sustainable transmission solutions.

The Board also canceled three baseline projects that are no longer required due to changes in regional energy needs, including the withdrawal of plans to deactivate certain generation units.

The full details of the approved projects and changes can be found on PJM's official website.
