PGCIL commissions India’s first fully digital substation

30 Dec 2020

PUNJAB, INDIA - The Power Grid Corporation of India (PGCIL) has recently commissioned a fully digital 400 kV substation.

The digital substation project involved retrofitting the existing Malerkotla substation with full digital technology.
The complete digital upgrade of the Malerkotla substation required updating the protection and control systems, including the busbar protection system.
IEC 61850 process bus technology had to be installed on all the following components in the air-insulated substation (AIS) switchyard: three 400 kV transmission lines (Malerkotla-Dadri, Malerkotla - Patiala and Malerkotla - Ludhiana), three 400/220 kV transformers and one 50 MVAR bus reactor.
The manufacturer has carried out studies and testing at its Protection, Automation and Control (PAC) and Real-Time Simulation (RTS) Labs, facilitating improved network design and architecture and multi-vendor IED interoperability which were recognized for standardization of various processes in IEC and CIGRE, the company said in a press release.
The manufacturer incorporated virtual local area networks and multicast filtering for efficient network traffic management.
