In a bid to expedite $78 million in power transmission projects, Peru has qualified two companies, Alupar Perú and Consorcio Eléctrico de Villacurí, as part of a reassignment process. The energy and mines ministry announced that these companies are now eligible for three of the 14 projects up for tender, including the Maravilla and Puno Sur substations, as well as the Runatullo-Satipo transmission line.

The tender process, initiated in January, is scheduled for selection later this month. This initiative stems from a mechanism established by the government in 2021 aimed at reactivating complementary transmission system projects. These projects are part of the transmission investment plans previously approved by the energy and mining investment regulator, Osinergmin.

In a related development, the ministry has declared a "grave" shortfall in the Bagua-Jaén-San Ignacio system due to insufficient production and transport capacity. This issue is expected to persist until the expansion of Electro Oriente's Jaén substation in the Cajamarca region, anticipated to be completed by March 30, 2025. An Osinergmin report highlighted a 114% overload on a substation transformer this year, raising concerns about potential impacts on growth in 2024-25. To address this, the ministry has decreed the need for an additional 12MW of capacity and has tasked Electro Oriente with procuring the necessary resources to resolve the supply shortfall.
