Greenlink Project welcomes Arrival of Massive Transformers from Rotterdam

This ambitious endeavor extends from Great Island in Co. Wexford, Ireland, to Pembroke in Wales, ranking as one of the most pivotal infrastructure initiatives in Europe.

 

The Greenlink project stands as a monumental undertaking, constituting a 500MW, 190km (118 miles) electricity interconnector spanning beneath the Irish Sea. This ambitious endeavor extends from Great Island in Co. Wexford, Ireland, to Pembroke in Wales, ranking as one of the most pivotal infrastructure initiatives in Europe.

The Pembroke Power Station Berth, which is part of the ambitious undertaking, has recently received a significant delivery in the form of four hefty transformers. These colossal units, each weighing a staggering 170 tons, successfully completed a journey from Rotterdam to Wales. Spearheaded by Robert Wynn & Sons on behalf of Züst & Bachmeier, this transportation endeavor was an integral part of the expansive Greenlink project.

As delineated by Greenlink Interconnector Limited, the comprehensive Greenlink initiative encompasses a sophisticated subsea and underground high voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnector system. This intricate system is complemented by associated converter stations, forming a crucial link between the established electricity grids of Ireland and the UK. These respective grids are operated by EirGrid and National Grid.

With the successful attainment of financial closure in March 2022, the project has transitioned into the construction phase. Onshore construction efforts are currently in progress, with the anticipation of project commissioning slated for culmination by the close of 2024.
