Ørsted completes offshore substation

25 Oct 2021

YORKSHIRE, UK -- Hornsea Two will be the Danish company's 13th offshore wind farm in the UK.

The offshore wind farm developer Ørsted announced that the installation of the Hornsea Two wind farm offshore substation along with all 165 wind turbine foundations in the North Sea, 89 km (53.7 miles) off the coast of Yorkshire have been successfully completed.

Heerema Marine Contractors performed the substation installation with the help of its large crane vessel Sleipnir. According to Ørsted, the Hornsea offshore substation, weighing around 8,000 tonnes, is the world's largest AC offshore substation to date.

Hornsea Two will be the Danish company's 13th offshore wind farm in the UK and once its operational, the wind farms combined should be providing over 7% of Britain's electricity.

"The project is now ready for the final third of wind turbines that are yet to be installed," Ørsted said in a recent announcement "Soon, 165 turbines will spin, and constitute another big step in the decarbonization of power production in the world's largest offshore wind market."

The windfarm and its substation are scheduled to be commissioned in early 2022.
