Ontario Starts Construction on St. Clair Transmission Line
Hydro One has begun construction on the St. Clair Transmission Line, a 64-kilometre, double-circuit 230 kV transmission line connecting Lambton County and Chatham-Kent. The project includes expanding the Chatham Switching Station and Lambton Transformer Station, as well as converting Wallaceburg TS to 230 kV by 2028.
The project is part of the province's Energy for Generations plan, aimed at ensuring reliable, affordable, and clean energy for growing regions. Southwestern Ontario has seen rapid industrial and population growth, fueled in part by electric vehicle and battery manufacturing facilities, greenhouses, and residential development.
Electricity demand in the Windsor-Essex and Chatham regions is expected to exceed 2,300 megawatts over the next decade, and the new line will provide 450 MW of additional capacity - enough to power a city the size of Windsor.
Construction is expected to create approximately 70 jobs, with Hydro One's contractors Forbes Bros. and Black & McDonald leading the work. The project follows consultations with local communities and Indigenous groups, as part of a broader effort to expand the province's electricity infrastructure.
The St. Clair Transmission Line is a key step in Ontario's long-term strategy to meet rising electricity demand while supporting economic growth and maintaining energy security.
