O&R Energizes Lovett Substation to Boost Reliability for Rockland County, NY

26 Nov 2024
Orange and Rockland Utilities (O&R) has energized its new 345 kV addition to the Lovett Substation in Stony Point, marking a significant improvement in electric service reliability for about 50,000 customers in Rockland County. This $58 million project, completed on the site of the former Lovett Generating Station, incorporates advanced gas-insulated substation (GIS) technology, which reduces the required footprint and maintenance needs.

The Lovett Substation connects to the transmission grid via overhead lines, enhancing the stability of the electric system. It is the second substation O&R has completed in three months, following the opening of the Blooming Grove Substation in July.

"The Lovett Substation reflects our dedication to clean and reliable energy while supporting New York's climate goals," said Michele O'Connell, O&R's President and CEO. Stony Point Supervisor Jim Monaghan highlighted its local benefits, including tax revenue and improved energy reliability for the community.

In 2024, O&R has invested over $156 million in electric system enhancements, continuing its commitment to modernizing infrastructure for future growth and resilience.
