NYSEG Begins Construction on Key Ithaca Grid Infrastructure Upgrade
New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has begun a $4.7 million upgrade to the Cayuga Heights Substation in Ithaca, according to a community announcement.
The project, which serves more than 5,000 customers, is part of a broader infrastructure effort funded through the company’s last Public Service Commission-approved rate case.
The upgrade includes installation of a new 34.5 kV capacitor bank at the Cayuga Heights Substation, located on North Triphammer Road. Construction began in March and is expected to be completed in 2027.
“The upgrades to the Cayuga Heights Substation will have a real benefit for our customers in Ithaca,” said Marc Geaumont, president of NYSEG. “Substation upgrades improve reliability across the entire grid and help ensure that homes, businesses, and other facilities have power when they need it most.”
The project is part of a nearly $46 million initiative to upgrade multiple substations in the Ithaca area.
“Strengthening the reliability of our electric grid is important for both developing more housing and for long-term economic growth,” said Rod Howe, Town of Ithaca supervisor. “This project represents a smart investment in Ithaca’s energy future.”
NYSEG, a subsidiary of Avangrid, also noted broader plans under its Powering NY rate proposal, which includes proposed investments of $16 billion to modernize grid infrastructure. The initiative aims to improve reliability, efficiency, and resiliency while supporting increased demand and state energy goals.
